United States Geography The United States is located in the center of the North America continent. It is the second largest country in the continent and the fourth largest in the whole world after Russia, Canada, and China. Its total area is 3.797 million square miles (9.834 million square kilometers). The Bodies of Water in the U.S. In the United States, there is a really large river system called the Mississippi/Missouri river system. The mountains are in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Montana. The highest mountain in the states is Mt Elbert, rises 14,439 feet above the sea level. The highest mountain in the US is Mt McKinley, located in alaska, rises 20,320 feet above the sea level, it is also the tallest mountain in the north america. The other main mountains in the us is the pacific coast volcanoes, which is located in Washington, Oregon, and California. The famous volcanoes in this range are mt rainier, mt hood, and mt shasta. These are the highest volcanoes in the us and the world.the volcanoes are usually formed in the place where the tectonic plates meets. And the us pacific ocean coast is on the border of the plates and that is why there are a lot of earthquake in california.
